| The current Passat looks a lot like this one; VW's designers got it right first time. One of the biggest cars in its class, its classic looks and quality feel justify high prices. And it lasts well, so your money is safe. The big body and long wheelbase give generous interior space plus a good ride. The cabin is beautifully finished in high quality hard-wearing materials. Safety standards were high for the time, with ABS, twin airbags, and side bags from mid-1998. Engines are lively and reliable. The 125bhp 1.8 20v petrol unit is more than adequate. There's also a 150bhp 1.8T turbo, plus a spirited V5 and a smooth V6 with four-wheel drive. Turbodiesels are among the best: the TDi PD 115 promises 0-60 in under 11 seconds and 50+ mpg. Handling is assured, precise and enjoyable. What more do you want in a mid-market car? |
